Continuing Education Sponsors

What are continuing education (CE) sponsors?
Continuing education sponsors are organizations that have submitted their programs to CFP Board for review to verify that the programs meet CFP Board’s continuing education standards. Only those CE sponsors who have registered programs with CFP Board may advertise that the programs have been submitted to CFP Board for CE credit.

How can my organization benefit from becoming a CE sponsor?
There are more than 60,000 CFP® certificants in the United States today, and each certificant must complete at least 30 hours of continuing education every two years, including a two-hour program on CFP Board's ethical standards. These numbers illustrate the opportunity that exists for CE sponsors to market their programs to CFP® certificants. To assist certificants in finding courses that have been accepted by CFP Board for CE credit, CFP Board lists CE sponsors on the Web site.

Where can I learn more?
Download CFP Board's Continuing Education Sponsor Registration Agreement to review the terms and conditions of CE Sponsor registration.

To view the subjects that CFP Board accepts for CE credit, see Appendix A of the CFP® Certification: Policies, Renewal Requirements and Continuing Education Standards. In general, the CE program must increase the professional competency of CFP® certificants; be developed by person(s) qualified in the subject matter; contain current, accurate content; be presented in an appropriate design and format; and use a title that accurately represents the program's content.

2010 Updates to CE Sponsor and Program Registration Process

On September 21, 2009, CFP Board announced upcoming changes to CFP Board’s continuing education policies. The following is a brief overview of some changes that will go into effect January 1, 2010:
  • CE Sponsor registration with CFP Board will be required on an annual, calendar year basis.
  • CE programs offered by registered CE Sponsors will be registered with CFP Board on an annual, calendar year basis, with program application fees determined by the length of each individual program (number of hours).
  • CFP Board will discontinue the “Web link” option and associated fee for CE Sponsors who wished to have their Web site appear as a link on CFP Board’s listings of CE Sponsors; CFP Board’s Web site will hold links for all sponsors who provide valid Web site addresses.
The updated policies were established in an effort to best meet the needs of our growing sponsor registry, to ensure the ongoing widespread availability of quality continuing education options for CFP® certificants, and to maintain the rigorous standards CFP Board has established for the CFP® certification.
